Because of that Penguin, lots of sites with spam link building techniques have been falling down their rankings. If you were not knocked down by using unnatural link building strategy, you should pay more attention to natural link building, if not, you are probably knocked down by next Penguin refresh.

Google has released 3rd Penguin Update on October 5, 2012, which means Google will keep on updating its algorithms to avoid spam link building. So you need to be extra careful while build links for your site. There are top 5 natural link building tips for 2012, which will help you not only survive the Penguin update, but safely keep and improve your rankings for the long term.

Tip 1, Go for Guest Blog Posting

Nowadays, guest blog posting is an effective way to build natural links for your site, which is win-win to both guest blog and guest blogger. First, you provide original and high-quality content to other blogs, and then you will get one way Dofollow natural Backlinks and receive direct traffic to your website. If the guest blog is highly-related to your niche, the traffic you get through guest posting will probably be your customer.

Guest posting has been an effective way to get links and targeted traffic naturally. On October 9, 2012, Matt Cutts made a video to answer questions from AJ Kohn “What is Google’s view on guest blogging for links?”. Matt dropped a hint that high quality content is the king of the guest posting, so you need devote time and effort to your writings. Besides, it will help you to be known a little better to have your Google Authorship. Matt also referred to the intent of guest posting, which is for spreading value-added information to more people not only for links, if you are just for links with crappy articles, please don’t do guest posting.

Tip 2, Diversify Anchor Texts

You should remember that never use the same anchor text for all backlinks, which saves you from being treated as a spammer by search engines and help you to improve your rankings. Google hates feeling like that you force it to give you a high ranking for a specific keyword. For example, your target keyword is “SEO”, and you make all partners link to “SEO” as anchor text, then Google will treat you as spammer.

Actually, if people link to your site naturally, do you think they will use the same keywords? Definitely not. Thus, you should diversify your anchor text in a natural way.

Tip 3, Link to Inner-Pages Other Than Homepage

It is known that homepage is the most important page for a site, but you should not ignore that the real content is at inner pages and blog posts.  Think about it, if people link to your site, where will they link to? Obviously, most of them link to real content pages not your homepage. It simply doesn’t make logical sense for Googlebot if you make a large majority of your backlinks point to your homepage and very few of them are linking to your blog posts and inner pages.

Tip 4, Make Full Use of Forum Signature

You should get involved in forums related to your niche. Whenever you leave one comment, you create a new backlink to your site. You cannot just say “nice post”, “good idea”, “thanks for your share”, “I will share to others”, etc. you need to make your message value added. In this way, it is a form of natural link building. Meanwhile, people get valuable information from your comment will visit your site and link back to it, which will create some high quality backlinks and traffic to your blog.

Tip 5, Share Content on Social Networking

Social signals have become one of the factors of Google ranking algorithm. Once you post fresh content on your site, make sure you share it on all your social networking. If the content get more likes on Facebook, or get lots of retweets on Twitter, or get more votes on G+, Google will think this page is popular and people love this content, so Google will give a higher score when ranking.

All in all, when you make you link building strategy, please keep in mind of the above 5 natural link building tips, which will help you keep a long-term success for your site.

  • After this penguin update I think these are the worthy tips for link building..

  • Thanks Karen,

Guest blogging is something I will have to give more consideration to. When it comes to natural link building, I have found article marketing to be the ticket to get me high rankings. It is something I like to do anyway, so it is a win-win. When I first started article marketing, I did not even have a listing on the first page of Google search.
Now that I have some good content out there, It has remained fairly easy for me to stay in the top three search results listings. (for my targeted keywords) I make every page SEO friendly by doing what I call “on-page” optimization, that is:
First researching the top contenders for my targeted keywords or keyword phrase.
Then producing top quality information which better defines the meanings and relevance towards those keywords. Doing this alone keeps much of the article content I produce working their way to the top placement listings.

  • Back to square one I guess. I for one never indulged in sophisticated link building techniques, but that doesn’t mean I don’t agree with some of those who do. And a homepage might be apparently important for a website, but the fact is that the call to action page is the vital one. We usually don’t incorporate CTA on the homepage after all. Thanks for sharing the tips on natural link building.

  • Wow. Thank you so much for this information. I did not think about linking to the sub pages, not just to the homepage. Thank you for pointing this out (among the other helpful tips in this post)!
