Ethical Link Building Techniques That Work

To the outside world, search engine optimization (SEO) can seem bewildering. There’s a never-ending stream of terminology and very little transparency.

Within this confusing situation, there’s constant mention of ethics. Websites that rise up the search engine rankings may attract criticism for using unethical methods. What this means is that they may be regarded as acting outside the search engine guidelines.

But it’s also clear that such actions can bring short-term success. For those looking for sustainable activity, using ‘white hat’ techniques is certainly the way forward. But it’s not necessarily easy. The reason why so many businesses seem to be relying on shady practices is because they can produce results quickly.

Don’t give up!

If you’ve tried some ethical link building approaches, but not had too much success so far, then the best advice is to keep on trying. They can take a while to have an impact, but they will help you to build an online presence that should last.

It may be the case that you’re concentrating your efforts on some areas that may not have the impact that you desire. The following approaches can all pay dividends. If you’re prepared to put in the time and to mix up your link building techniques, they should help your website to rise up the rankings:

Article distribution

Many website owners are in desperate need of good quality, original content. If you’re able to provide it, then you’ll find that they’ll usually be willing to give your website a link in return.

Writing content and approaching blog owners can be a particularly effective technique. This can give you access to some high quality locations in which to place links.

At the other end of the spectrum, you might wish to be wary of article directories that appear to contain a mass of low quality content. They are likely to be considerably less useful. If your content is well-written, you should expect to have it placed on great sites.

Directory submissions

Some people think that directories are dead. They’re wrong! Put simply, a good link from a directory still offers considerable value in terms of your link profile.

This doesn’t mean that you should be making automated submissions to thousands of directories. That’s not the quality approach that you should really be looking for.

Instead, take a look at a directory and the websites that it already lists. You’ll want to have your own website listed alongside other high quality sites. Don’t be afraid to approach directories that have strict editorial guidelines. These will often offer the links that will have the biggest impact.

Many directories do require reciprocal links. In general terms, you may wish to restrict the number of these directories that you submit to.

Online press releases

A press release can be used to send out information about your business. It’s a great way to build links, but it has even greater value too. It can also be used to spread the word about your business and may bring in additional clients and sales.

The biggest mistake that many make in distributing press releases is to forget that these should be newsworthy. That makes them fundamentally different from articles.

By making use of the techniques above, you should be able to get some impressive SEO results. They won’t happen overnight. The aim is to achieve impressive and sustainable rankings.
