5 Things You Shouldn’t Do On Twitter

I both love and hate Twitter in equal measure. I love it because I have opened up a new way of promoting and driving traffic to my blogs. I hate it because so many people use it to spam and bombard other users for products like teeth whitener and Magento gift cards, stuff the majority of us will have no interest in.

1. Do Not Make It All About You

Nobody wants to know what you had for breakfast this morning, how many times a day you stop and scratch yourself or that you are sending the latest message while sitting on your toilet.

Nobody will mind the odd tweet about you, or what you are doing, but if you post nothing but personal tweets about yourself (remember this is an account to promote your site or blog) then you’ll find your follower list falling rapidly.

2. There Is No Need To Retweet Everything You Find

This is something that I find really annoying. There is nothing wrong with retweeting a decent article or blog post but if you do nothing but retweet then you are pretty much pumping information at your followers that they will probably already know if you are in a small niche.

3. Don’t Go Nuts Posting Countless Affiliates

Oh how I hate this. Some guy posts nothing but links to affiliate products that are of no use at all to 99% of us. I don’t want to buy a teeth whitening kit or buy acne cream that doesn’t work.

I understand you want to make money, hell I make money on Twitter, just do it in moderation instead. For every affiliate link publish say five tweets that are not, or even more.

4. Don’t Reply To Bots

I’m not sure if this will actually hurt you but it is annoying so I included it. Twitter, like Facebook, is full of bots who will reply to your tweet (normally because you have a word in your tweet that triggers their program) in the hope that you will reply and help them gain more followers that they can spam.

5. You Don’t Have To Recommend 100 People For Follow Friday

Do you participate in the Follow Friday thing? I’ve done it once or twice, for those that don’t know it is a weekly chance to suggest to other people some interesting people they might like to follow.

Sadly some people go a bit too far and, instead of listing a few, they post multiple tweets with pretty much their entire follower list listed. Don’t do it!

There are probably many many more to be added, if you have on then feel free to leave it in a comment below. 🙂

  • Thanks for the Twitter information. I am about to open a twitter account and are doing some research on how to use this media the best way. To get a few no nos are also great.
